India guar gum export seen up 20-25 pct

MUMBAI, June 14 (Reuters) - India's guar gum export may rise 20-25 percent in 2010/11 spurred by demand and hopes of higher output on good progress of monsoon rains in the country, the head of a trade body said on Monday.
"We expect guar gum export to rise by 20-25 percent this year in comparison to last year," said Purshottam Hissaria, President, Indian Guar Gum Manufacturers' Association.
India is the world's largest producer and exporter of guar gum and shipped about 200,000 tonnes of the commodity in the year ending March, he said. The final figures are awaited from federal government.
"If the output remains good...export will definitely rise," said Hissaria.
Hopes of a normal monsoon and attractive prices are likely to boost guar acreage in India by about 10 percent in the upcoming sowing season, government officials and industry players said. The output fell by over 80 percent last year due to the worst monsoon in four decades. "Due to shortage of water in canals in the irrigated areas, farmers may sow more guar because it requires less water and also improves the fertility of the land," Hissaria had told Reuters. "Famers also got good price this year."
Planting of the rain-fed crop commences from the beginning of June in irrigated areas, while farmers in non-irrigated areas sow after mid-June, when monsoon reaches Rajasthan.
India's monsoon delivered normal rainfall in the past week, weather office said on Thursday, boosting prospects of higher farm output and lower inflation in Asia's third-largest economy.

DEMAND RECOVERY
A recovery in the global economy may boost exports of the commodity which has industrial and food usage, Hissaria said.
"Demand from oil drilling companies is good and may remain strong during the year," he added.
Industrial guar gum is the most sought-after guar product, and accounts for about 45 percent of total demand. Industrial gum is used as a controlling agent in oil wells to facilitate easy drilling and prevent fluid loss.
